What varicocele is
Varicocele is enlargement of veins in the scrotum. It is more common on the left side. Some patients have no symptoms and notice it only during examination, while others feel dull discomfort, heaviness, or aching after standing for a long time or exertion.
Varicocele may be related to semen quality or fertility concerns in some men, but not everyone with varicocele has infertility. Assessment should consider symptoms, age, future fertility plans, examination findings, and other tests when appropriate.
Symptoms that should be checked
See a doctor if dull discomfort recurs, you feel a soft vein-like lump, one side of the scrotum seems clearly different, or fertility is a concern. If scrotal pain is sudden and severe, swelling is marked, nausea or vomiting occurs, or pain begins abruptly, seek hospital care to rule out urgent conditions.
The doctor may take a history, examine the area, and consider ultrasound or referral if needed. The aim is to confirm the likely cause and separate it from other conditions.
What to prepare
