What may cause a scrotal lump or swelling
A scrotal lump or swelling may be caused by hydrocele, spermatocele, varicocele, hernia, inflammation, injury, or a lump arising from the testicle itself. Patients may notice slow swelling, heaviness, a soft lump, or size changes with posture.
Some causes are not urgent, but self-diagnosis by touch is unreliable. Location and texture need medical examination, and some patients may need ultrasound to clarify the cause.
Warning signs that should not wait
Seek hospital care if scrotal pain is sudden and severe, swelling or redness develops quickly, nausea or vomiting occurs, fever is present, or the testicle appears to sit abnormally. These symptoms may relate to urgent conditions such as torsion or severe infection.
If a lump keeps growing, feels unusually hard, persists without pain, or comes with weight loss or marked fatigue, make an appointment rather than ignoring it.
How the clinic can help
The doctor will ask about duration, pain, size change, relation to standing, coughing or straining, and then examine the area. Ultrasound or referral may be considered when appropriate.
Patients can start with the clinic's urinary tract, prostate, and male reproductive consultation service. If you are unsure whether symptoms are urgent, call before traveling.
