Phimosis and Balanitis: Symptoms That Should Be Assessed
Tight foreskin, inflammation, or painful retraction may seem minor, but some symptoms should not be forced or delayed. This guide explains when to seek assessment.

What phimosis and inflammation mean
Phimosis means the foreskin is difficult or impossible to retract. Inflammation may cause redness, soreness, itching, swelling, odor, or unusual discharge. Causes may include irritation, infection, hygiene issues, diabetes, or skin conditions.
Do not forcefully retract a tight foreskin because this can cause injury or paraphimosis, where the foreskin gets stuck behind the head of the penis. If the foreskin is stuck, painful, swollen, or color changes occur, seek urgent hospital care.
When to see a doctor
Assessment is reasonable if inflammation recurs, retraction is difficult, urination is painful, cracks or sores recur, pus or odor appears, or symptoms occur together with poorly controlled diabetes. The goal is to separate infection, skin inflammation, true phimosis, and other causes.
Some patients may start with hygiene care, medicine, or observation. If symptoms recur or indications are clear, the doctor may discuss procedural options such as circumcision when appropriate.
What to prepare
Prepare details about duration, prior medicines used, recurrence, underlying disease or diabetes, and any urinary symptoms. If privacy is a concern, you can mention it to staff before the visit.
The clinic's urinary tract, prostate, and male reproductive consultation service can help assess the issue systematically and provide advice based on the actual symptoms.
