What vasectomy is
Vasectomy is a male contraception method intended for long-term prevention of pregnancy. It should generally be approached as a permanent decision. Although reversal may be possible in some cases, patients should not decide on vasectomy with the assumption that reversal will always work.
Pre-procedure counseling matters, especially around future family plans, shared decision-making with a partner, underlying diseases, current medicines, prior scrotal or groin surgery, and understanding follow-up after the procedure.
Key points before deciding
Vasectomy does not make a person sterile immediately. Another contraception method is usually needed until follow-up testing or the doctor's plan confirms that it is appropriate to stop. Ask clearly when semen testing or follow-up should occur.
Vasectomy also does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Condoms are still important when STI protection is needed.
Preparation and warning signs
Before consultation, prepare your medical history, medication list, allergy history, and prior surgery history. If you have scrotal pain, swelling, or a lump, tell the doctor because these symptoms may need assessment before planning.
After a procedure, seek medical advice if there is heavy bleeding, severe pain or swelling, fever, marked wound redness, or symptoms that worry you. Do not adjust medicines on your own unless instructed.
Start with consultation
Patients in Fang, Mae Ai, and Chai Prakan can begin with the clinic's urinary tract, prostate, and male reproductive consultation service to discuss suitability, limits, and follow-up before deciding.
